Horror Sequel that Shouldn't have Existed? Empty Horror Sequel that Shouldn't have Existed?

Post by Jason Voorhees April 27th 2024, 4:06 pm

As the title states! What Horror movies shouldn't have had a sequel after it.

This could be after an original or a sequel to the sequel.

Well, I'm a little confused now that you mention the title.

How about The Blair Witch Project?

I agree it didn't deserve a sequel.

For me...without Danielle Harris and Donald Pleasence involvement I would say Halloween 4-6...and Jaws 3 and Jaws the Revenge definitely did not need sequels.

Jaws 3 was the classic idea of a movie that never should have been greenlit. Some of the more recent entries into The Omen franchise should not have been made. Consider the remake and The First Omen.

The Exorcist definitely never needed and never should've had any sequels.

This choice might be a bit controversial, but I don't think Scream should've ever had a direct sequel. It was always going to spawn a franchise, since the nature of slasher movies lend themselves to sequels so well, but ugh... Scream was good for what it was and had an interesting premise, but it was a premise I felt could only really work once, and the subsequent sequels felt like they were trying too hard to cram it in there. To make matters worse, Scream was so successful, it created a decade of copycats who tried to turn Scream's formula into the new template for modern horror movies, lacking the understanding of what made Scream successful in the first place.

On the other end of the spectrum, TCM was a film that should've had sequels and well... Let's be honest, it never really had any until the Netflix film. All the movies in that franchise are so disjointed from the rest that it makes it hard to look at any of them like they're connected at all. Nothing was able to capture that near perfect atmosphere from the original. The TCM remake and its prequel were the only two films that ever really felt like they existed in the same universe.

The Blair Witch Project feels like a movie to me that needed absolutely no sequels.

The major franchises I'm more or less fine with no matter how many more sequels/remakes/reboots they're going to make. I will keep paying my money to watch them, no matter how absurd it will all look 10 years from now on.

I agree with The Exorcist not needing sequels. A friend of mine went to see the Blumhouse movie that came out last October and he couldn't stand it. I had the misfortune of telling him I heard a trilogy was planned. He was even MORE disturbed.

How about Hostel? I liked what I saw out of the original and part 2 but have no idea if there's a third.

I Know What You Did Last Summer had sequels that didn't seem to pan out. One was straight to DVD from what I've heard.

I enjoyed the "I know..." sequels. I didn't mind them, with the first movie being good, but not exactly an Oscar-worthy material, if you get what I'm saying. I haven't seen the series and not planning to.

Call me crazy, but the fact that are Exorcist movies other than the original has somehow totally escaped my mind at the moment. So yeah, that would be another movie that is just good as it is.

I agree the Exorcist shouldn't need to be a franchise.

The scream sequels after Scream 2 should have just been random people trying to gain infamy by taking the mantle and going after Sydney more than it being just a pursuit of "Personal"

Yeah TCM Sequels weren't that Good...TCM 3/New Generation weren't needed personally the major shift into Horror Comedy is insane, R.A. Mihailoff, Ken Foree, and William Butler in TCM3 were the best parts everything else was...eh, the remakes from the early 2000s were perfect so I have no issues, Leatherface "Prequel" wasn't needed at all it was nonsensical...Texas Chain Saw 3D had a very nice premise, Gore, and plot, but the plot holes with the characters age and the "Do your Thang cuz." Was just 💀 but unlike most I was interested in Texas 3D way more than TCM 3/Leatherface/New Generation infinitely and the Netflix Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 film was good to me and people just didn't like it because it had "Modern" time issues lol.

I Know What You Did series is by definition a "Cult Classic" but the sequels were just absolutely insane especially the one "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" with our own Michael Myers actor, Don Shanks as The Fisherman was just "Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives" without the Metafictional aspect where they basically brought back the Fisherman as a undead spectre.

Amityville Horror had way too many sequels, as did Children of the Corn. I didn't think Ghoulies or Critters needed as many sequels. Shame about Jaws 3 and the Revenge since Jaws I and 2 were some of my favorites. Troll 2 was absolutely horrible. I could also go on about Basket Case and Pupper Master after the 4th movie but I'd be here all day. There are a lot of straight to streaming that should never have been made, including the Tubi version of Terror Train and Creepshow 3

It's been a very long time since I have seen the movie, but I remember enjoying it until they revealed the fisherman's identity, that of course was a completely illogical move. Thanks for reminding me about Don Shanks, that's an interesting piece of trivia. He has also appeared in Urban Legends: Bloody Mary, which I still need to see. What are your thoughts about the Urban Legend sequels?

And how many sequels are there to Amityville and Children, about 50 apiece plus DVD movies? Neither franchise was all that great in my opinion.

Never cared much for the torture porn genre, so Hostel didn't do anything for me. I am surprised Hostel didn't have more sequels purely based off the popularity of the first. What I don't get is how Eli Roth basically became the spokesperson for modern horror based off of that one movie alone. You'd think he was pumping out banger after banger, when it really was just Hostel, Cabin Fever, and a bunch of forgettable stuff you might not even realize were his.... I did enjoy Thanksgiving, though.

I can't even remember I Know What You Did Last Summer, it was that forgettable for me... It was the first of those, Teen Scream, Scream Clones, and I just didn't care for that style of film, so I skipped the sequels. Same thing with the Urban Legend series, even though I love the premise because I love Urban Legends... I just didn't enjoy the vibe of that style of film that was popular at the time. Urban Legend is a series I wouldn't mind seeing getting a reboot... You know, just put more focus on the Urban Legends par and less on trying to make the movies feel like Scream.

Quite literally Amityville has about 30+ sequels some legitimate and some cash grab nonsense LOL! Children of the Corn should have stopped by the 3rd installment anything after it was just BAD.

Technically, there are 9 movies in the official franchise... And 35 or so more that you can't really consider part of the Amityville series... Most of these movies are totally unrelated to anything else under the Amityville umbrella. Since Amityville is an actual town on Long Island, the DeFayo murders are a very real and very well-known murder case, and the Lutz family's account of the haunting is very public, so you can't really copyright any of that... Meaning any low budget studio can make a crappy movie and slap the name Amityville on it, and claim it's loosely based on the DeFyao or Lutz cases without much fret of legal ramifications... Just as long as they don't use 'The Amityville Horror' in the name or any part of the story introduced by the book or movie, you can do whatever you want. It's actually a clever, if not a bit scummy, way to get around copyright laws and get free publicity for your garbage film by making people think it's a sequel to one of the actual Amityville Movies, when it's otherwise unrelated.

As for Leprechaun... I was done with him by the point he started going to the Hood and into space, lol.

I do love Leprechaun 4 In Space though. It’s a fun guilty pleasure.

For me, they should’ve stopped The Howling movies after 3. Part 4 was awful.

So apart from the original Leprechaun with Jennifer Aniston, the only sequel I have seen was the 2018 movie, which I considered a great fun. I think if the original movie doesn't take itself seriously at all, it doesn't really matter how many sequels it has, as long as they follow the same route. Still need to see the rest of the sequels to make a definitive opinion, though. Smile

Ooooh man you're gonna be coming back here like "What did I watch?" 😂

Leprechaun definitely should have stopped at its 3rd original film or at the very least the 4th in my opinion.

Another series I believe they shouldn't have had made a sequel for was with out a doubt...

Sharknado...like yeah it's supposed to be unrealistical, goofy, and nonsensical but making about 5 or 6 is just taking itself too seriously at that point the Trilogy was fine and shouldn't have gotten any more sequels.

What do you mean? Well, if by any chance I manage to see the rest of the Leprechaun movies, by that time I probably won't come back to this thread to tell you about it, if that's what you're referring to. Smile

Sharknado is good as it is, let them make five more sequels, I don't care about it. You guys take this too seriously, while horror is exactly the one genre that is not to be taken really seriously, if you ask me. Horror movies are destinied to have sequels.

Sharknado...like yeah it's supposed to be unrealistical, goofy, and nonsensical but making about 5 or 6 is just taking itself too seriously at that point the Trilogy was fine and shouldn't have gotten any more sequels.

Personally, I wouldn't have made ANY Sharknado movie, but hey, my pockets aren't the ones being lined with cash.
