Critic offended by Friday the 13th (1980)

I've read where a critic was so offended and disgusted by the 1980 movie that he advertised Betsy Palmer's home address so people could go there and harass her.

Has anyone else heard this? This seems like a really low blow for even a critic if it's true.

Yup Gene Siskel didn’t like the movie so he gave out what he thought was her address. Problem was it was the wrong one. But yeah, that was a scummy and stupid thing to do, especially considering Adrienne King had a stalker who got into her place and I believe had a gun pointed at her. So it was stupid and selfish of Siskel to do that. I’m shocked he never got in trouble for doing something so dumb. Nowadays, he would get in trouble.

I've never heard that particular story before, though I'm well aware of Siskel an Eberts history of visceral hatred for horror movies bordering along the lines of parody. We get it, film critics don't like horror movies, but those two acted they had a personal vendetta against the genre, and the F13 series was definitely a favorite target. The only two horror films I ever really saw them give good reviews too that weren't old classics were Halloween, and Evil Dead 2 of all things.

Well they thought they spoke for everyone. Their show was a hit but they treated horror movies like trash and looked down their noses at horror fans. Just sad.

I agree 100%. If he did that nowadays, I have a feeling people would’ve put his address out there online. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone but I think that’s what would’ve happened.

Yeah he was a massive asshole and when I watch their reviews back on YouTube, I get so mad because all he and Ebert did was trash movies I liked. Still makes me mad.

I am not a fan of Reviews by movie Critics….. I just don’t think they get horror at all….. reviews by fellow fans of the genre is ok I can respect a review from someone who understands the themes and reasons why we enjoy these types of movies.

But some smuck for a news paper or what not magazine or whatever who looks down on the entire genres opinion means Jack shit to me.

Besides I like to form my own opinions before I even think about listening to anyone else’s.

Same here. I didn’t listen to one single reviewer when it came to movies like Jason X or Freddy Vs Jason. I made up my own mind because I wanted to see them. Not gonna let someone like Siskel tell me a movie is bad and make me change my mind.

I don't understand why people base movies, music, book, tv, over what critics say

For example Siskel and Ebert both gave The Burbs from Tom Hanks a thumbs down

That , to me, is Tom Hanks most enjoyable picture

This day and age, you couldn't do something like that without a major backlash from social media, but back then he must have thought he could get away with it. He was completely unjustified and thoughtless and should have faced criminal charges for endangerment

Yeah from what I heard Siskel was a major jerk and didn’t care who got hurt. He was just bitter people would rather see fun movies like Friday The 13th than the ones he felt they should see.
