Re: Splatterhouse 1988
I played the Sega Genesis port of Splatterhouse 3 when I was young. I remember it being fun if not a bit repetitive like most beat-em-ups could be. I remember it standing out most for just being one of the most unique games I ever played at the time, with impressive backgrounds and visuals for a console game from that time, and some of the most bizarre boss fights I'd ever experienced. Unless it was in some manic fever dream, I clearly remember a demonic teddy-bear, and a creature that could only be described as a circumcised penis with razor sharp teeth. I was always surprised the game didn't get more attention considering it came out around the same time as Doom and Mortal Kombat, when game developers were really starting to push the boundaries of the level of graphic violence allowed in video games. I don't remember many gamers talking about it, or parents trying to get it banned though. I am familiar with the original, it was a bit more straight-forward and punishing while 3 felt a more open, chaotic, and fun.
I'm less surprised the remake didn't really take off. The original trilogy was a cult hit at best, so the nostalgia demand just wasn't there, and this type of game just wasn't going to look like anything special to new players in today's gaming market. I skipped it myself for this very reason. I knew the game wasn't going to give me the same feel it did back then, when it was truly something unique, when now it was just another violent horror game in a very competitive market.

Yep, and Night Trap was Super Mario Brothers compared to these games. I guess parents can't get outraged over something they've never heard of. (Then again, I hadn't heard of Night Trap until several years ago) It's amazing how under the radar these games actually were.

It is disappointing. The first two games being buried on turbografx hasn't helped, since that console was an extreme rarity in North America. When the series finally got a port to a major console, I guess nobody wanted to rent a game that was the third part of series they weren't familiar with. It's the only reason I can think of to explain how this series became so overlooked, hardly even a footnote in VG history.

I know either PS2 or PS3 had a far far updated version of the game but I can't seem to find it anywhere!
