Is Nudity Necessary in Horror Films? Empty Is Nudity Necessary in Horror Films?

Disclaimer

LET'S NOT PERSONALLY ATTACK, HARASS, OR TARGET SOMEONE OVER THEIR OPINION! WE DO NOT FIGHT EACH OTHER! WE ARE ALL HORROR FANS SHARING OUR OWN SUBJECTIVE VIEWPOINTS! IF YOU'RE GOING TO ARGUE WITH SOMEONE, DO IT IN THE DM'S—NOT IN THE OPEN THREAD! IF YOU WANT TO REPLY, DO IT IN A WAY THAT'S RESPECTFUL AND NON-HOSTILE TO A FELLOW MEMBER! I LOVE DISCUSSIONS BUT WILL NOT TOLERATE FORUM DISRESPECT!

Known Clichés:

As everyone knows, clichés exist in all forms of fiction—from comics, video games, and anime to novels and, most notably, movies!

Movies, especially in the horror genre, are packed with familiar tropes. One of the most noticeable is nudity.

  • Mom and Dad sneaking away from the kids or a party.
  • Boyfriend and Girlfriend sneaking away from friends or parties.
  • Drunk or high friends or couples in an abandoned house or in the woods.
  • Cheating Boyfriend/Girlfriend with the protagonist's best friend.
  • The "Virgin's" first time having sex.
  • Pornographic-style acting or legitimate scenes.
  • A girl somehow not realizing it's not her lover. (Yes...this is a thing.)
  • Just horny teenagers (18+) or adults (Above 18+).

Arguments:

I’ve seen posts discussing this topic for years, including one I came across on Twitter today (November 19th, 2022). It has also been debated on Reddit, YouTube, and Facebook not by majority but it's been discussed.

The most common arguments I’ve seen are:

1. Nudity doesn’t add much to a movie and feels unnecessary.

2. Nudity can be viewed as sexist, especially in scenes that feel uncomfortable or exploitative.

These arguments reflect two sides of the same coin, and that’s completely understandable.

Some horror fans argue that nudity portrays female desire or admiration for the human body—regardless of gender.

Others claim they’re not watching horror movies for pointless nudity or cringy, wannabe Romeo-and-Juliet-style romances.

Since opinions vary, I want to hear what the Horror Community thinks about this topic!

On a related note, I’ve noticed that not all actors and actresses involved in these scenes are big names outside the adult industry. Some have even mentioned that they find the experience fun, exciting, or personally empowering. So perspectives on this matter aren’t limited to mainstream opinions.

My Opinion:

As a horror fan, I’ll always say that I prefer the kills, body count, blood, and gore above all else.

For me, nudity in horror films caters to a specific part of the fandom, and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, I also feel that some films push nudity WAY too hard for no reason other than "Hot women body."

Some horror movies almost turn into straight-up pornos or cringe-fests featuring people who clearly aren’t experienced in fake sex scenes or even get into it too well. That said, some horror franchises thrive on nudity, while others avoid it entirely. Examples?

1. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives—No nudity and yet a fan-favorite among the F13 community.

2. Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood—Mild nudity and still beloved by about half the fanbase.

3. Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning—Loaded with nudity.

For Part V it damaged one actress’s career as a teacher. This installment is often viewed as the black sheep of the franchise as well.

Clearly, nudity can be seen as both a pro and a con depending on the audience and society.

The recent Halloween Reboot didn’t even focus on sex as much as the original, avoiding the “horny teenagers” cliché altogether.

Personally, I don’t think nudity is ruining modern horror. I also don’t believe it’s inherently sexist, as any professional actor or actress can decline such scenes if they’re uncomfortable.

Let me make this absolutely clear before anyone misinterprets my words—if an actor or actress is MANIPULATED or FORCED into doing a nude or sex scene, I DO NOT SUPPORT IT!!!

That’s not just immoral and it’s abusive, both mentally and physically. No one should ever be coerced into performing such scenes, especially when they’re viewed by thousands or even millions of people.

At the same time, I support artistic expression—whether it involves nudity or not. But excessive nudity feels unhealthy to me.

Overall, I’d consider myself neutral on this topic—not strictly for or against nudity, as I’m here for the kills, gore, and body counts above all else.

As for their storylines and lore? That’s secondary for me as a horror fan.

So my question to the horror community (and the general public) is:

Is Nudity in Horror Unnecessary? Necessary? Sexist?Unwanted? Why or why not?

Is Nudity Necessary in Horror Films? Empty Re: Is Nudity Necessary in Horror Films?

Post by ThePunisher November 19th 2022, 2:31 pm

My opinion is that when I go to a horror movie, I want to see a story get told. I'm going to admit I get turned off by seeing nudity. At this point in time, I've seen so much of this stuff, I don't want to see any more.

I think it does hurt the genre and some of the people who watch the movies. I think it hurts the genre, in part, because it seems to market to the lowest common denominator in getting people to watch. I grew up as a teenager watching some other guys my age got the wrong idea about how people are supposed to dress and act.

I've seen the same thing in college during my undergraduate career where guys who have moved from other countries to the United States thinking they will automatically "get some" just by virtue of talking to the girls in the dorm. These guys had actually told me they had seen American movies, and they thought American girls were just like what they saw in the movies. Maybe they are, but here's no guarantee you'll be " getting busy" with a girl, especially if you're just making conversation for the very first time. It's almost like these guys thought making eye contact was enough to get a one-night stand.

I have to admit I may have been damaged myself. A guy I knew wanted to watch a horror movie with me that he had. It was loaded with nudity, and I just was too young and not ready. I still feel a bit hesitant about getting around this stuff.

Interesting take! I grew up on horror in the literal sense lol! My mom was pregnant with me watching horror movies and I was just automatically addicted to it at a young age didn't matter if it was Slasher, Kaiju, or Zombies! I watched it for the gore and anytime it was nudity she either covered my eyes or told me to cover my eyes and despite it, she realized early that I didn't care for breast/ass at that time whatsoever, I was focused on the monsters themselves more than anything else, I don't personally care for nudity but that instinct in our brains when we get older is "hehe boobies" for some of the more younger generations vs us older generation horror fans.

Your last line was why I put in the remark over the "least common denominator". The people saying "hehe boobies" are the ones who aren't there for the movie. They also seem to spend half the time talking on their cell phone or going for more snacks at the concession stand.

Correct! those demographics are the worse but sadly they help keep the genre alive with ticket sales! If they see even side-boob they would be 7/10 satisfied, I've seen some comments on social media where some are commenting "Wheres the nudity?" or "Why wasn't there?" in certain movies and I am thinking to myself...Horror ISN'T about the nudity tho! You and me can agree that Nudity is very much Meh to us in the horror genre like if its not romance or something why really focus on that?? Friday the 13th made it watchable and then others tried to mimick and it made it cringy!

I guess the feeling is that sex sells the movie more than the plotline sells the movie. Remember the line from Scream " Motive is incidental"?

I am not opposed to any type of graphic or non graphic themes shown in movies as long as it fits the story.

With that said some things are way over the top done for shock value some times it works some times it doesn’t that includes nudity and violence…..
One instance in a movie that comes to mind is Terrifier ( I haven’t seen the second not sure I will.) that scene with the saw was just ridiculous with over done nudity and violence combined….. for me that’s not what I want to see I want scares and thrills not to be disgusted …. But it’s a niche market and everything has a selling point to someone….including shock value Horror

That is very true! Wes Craven and the writers were ahead of their time during this film!

I can definitely see this point of few! Horror definitely is losing the senses of being creepy, scary, and overall goosebumps-inducing! I have to rewatch Terrifier and might even see the sequel later this year in December because during the time I had no money to really see movies didn't even see Halloween Ends in Theatres sadly...

Is Nudity Necessary in Horror Films? Empty Re: Is Nudity Necessary in Horror Films?

Post by I'm Not a Goalie November 20th 2022, 8:36 pm

You missed the biggest trope of them all! The seemingly mandatory, arguably hot girl undressing in the bathroom before climbing into the shower scene, that felt like it was a part of every slasher movie to come out of the 80's... And a lot more locker room scenes with an entire group of girls barring all, than you think would exist.

I remember being a teenager, and the chance at seeing nudity in some of those horror films was definitely a selling point... But that was through the eyes of a hormonal teenager who, at the time, didn't have many avenues to scratch that particular itch unless you had a relative or friend with a hidden stash of a... Certain type of magazine, cough, cough.

Now that I'm an adult, I could honestly care less if I never saw another set of boobs or pointless sex scene in another horror movie ever again. I don't mind seeing it either, but obligatory nudity is at the absolute bottom of things I'm looking for in a horror movie. In fact, it's not even on the list at all.

While the big franchises have never really needed nudity, although some of them definitely have used it, a lot of the second tier and below slasher films treated nudity and sex like they were a requirement, which I don't feel helped with the perception of sex in horror being an expectation rather than something that's occasionally just there.
,
And as much as I hate to get political, I don't feel like I have a choice since 'Horror' being sexist towards women has definitely become a Culture War issue. Male gaze, blah, blah, blah... How dare men find women in movies attractive, like there's not thousands of romcoms with insanely attractive men. Is it sexist? Depends on the circumstances, and quite frankly, the subject is very subjective. If the woman doesn't mind showing off her body then what's the big deal? Twitter warriors don't have the right to tell her she can't or try to shame her for doing so just because her actions don't comply with some snowflakes modern sensibilities. That being said though, no actor should be pressured or even forced to be shown nude on camera if their not comfortable with it, nor should they be fired from or denied a role because their unwilling to do so... And there are a lot of story's out there about actresses in horror movies being pressured to do nude scenes out of fear they'd lose their roles in the film, and that practice is objectively disgusting.

Yes, it was over the top but in Saw III’s defense it is the third in a series that became labeled “ Torture Porn movies ” each film in the series topped the other in its graphic and violent scenes so by the third one you know what you are going to get and while watching the Freezer shower scene while jarring makes scenes in the context of the story with the traps become more elaborate and harder or impossible to escape since it’s Jigsaws would be apprentices’ making them…. The story becomes about testing them and punishing them for their wrong doing…..

but I went on a ramble.. if the freezer shower scene or the Girl hanging upside down with the saw scene from Terrifier was in the original Saw film I probably wouldn’t have watched the other films in the series… when there is no precedent for that kind of violence it doesn’t work for me story wise….. I actually like the first 5 saw films a lot 6 was ehh 7 was garbage Jigsaw was good I haven’t seen Spiral yet… but I do own it on Blu-ray…planning a Saw marathon very soon.

With that said some things are way over the top done for shock value some times it works some times it doesn’t that includes nudity and violence…..
One instance in a movie that comes to mind is Terrifier ( I haven’t seen the second not sure I will.) that scene with the saw was just ridiculous with over done nudity and violence combined….. for me that’s not what I can to see I want scares and thrills not to be disgusting…. But it’s a niche market and everything has a selling point to someone.

No worries, you saved yourself a lot of money…..I didn’t watch it theaters either and I am glad I didn’t….. I would have most likely walk out.

I even realized the current Halloween timeline was honestly PG-13! I don't really remember seeing nudity or a sex scene!

Yeah there isn’t a sex scene at all in the new trilogy except for the make out “getting so dry fucked.” Scene in the 2018 movie…. Kills had nothing… Ends has Allyson and Corey having sex off screen…. So it was definitely very toned down in that aspect.

Is Nudity Necessary in Horror Films? Empty Re: Is Nudity Necessary in Horror Films?

The seemingly mandatory, arguably hot girl undressing in the bathroom before climbing into the shower scene, that felt like it was a part of every slasher movie to come out of the 80's... And a lot more locker room scenes with an entire group of girls barring all, than you think would exist.

That is true! I forgot about that one!

I'm Not a Goalie wrote:I remember being a teenager, and the chance at seeing nudity in some of those horror films was definitely a selling point... But that was through the eyes of a hormonal teenager who, at the time, didn't have many avenues to scratch that particular itch unless you had a relative or friend with a hidden stash of a... Certain type of magazine, cough, cough.

You aren't wrong about that LOL! the older years were far different but now its just cheesy fun for the average lonely man.

I'm Not a Goalie wrote:Now that I'm an adult, I could honestly care less if I never saw another set of boobs or pointless sex scene in another horror movie ever again. I don't mind seeing it either, but obligatory nudity is at the absolute bottom of things I'm looking for in a horror movie. In fact, it's not even on the list at all.

PREACH IT!

I'm Not a Goalie wrote:While the big franchises have never really needed nudity, although some of them definitely have used it, a lot of the second tier and below slasher films treated nudity and sex like they were a requirement, which I don't feel helped with the perception of sex in horror being an expectation rather than something that's occasionally just there.

Writers in those times were also former Porno writers like Sean Cunningham was once that.

I'm Not a Goalie wrote:And as much as I hate to get political, I don't feel like I have a choice since 'Horror' being sexist towards women has definitely become a Culture War issue.

There are always two sides to this toxic feministic ideology and it's getting idiotic lol Men can't do anything without being seen as the Villian.

So I wasn't overthinking it! thank you!

Is Nudity Necessary in Horror Films? Empty Re: Is Nudity Necessary in Horror Films?

Post by SonofOdin6039 November 21st 2022, 1:21 pm

Part of why I watch horror movies is for the atmosphere and suspense. A brief flash of nudity will reinforce the notion of why Jason Vorhees exists in the first place and why Camp Crystal Lake is an example of what happens when horny teenagers run amok. Human nature is what it is, and sex has been a major driving force in everything we do. Today's society is full of irresponsible acts and lack of consequence, but at the same time, some reality has to set in at some point. To me, overexposure to nudity takes away from the storyline and ruins the atmosphere. We get it...They're having sex. Ooh, la,la. Now can we get back to a story? Halloween and Friday the 13th are prime examples of how a horror movie can function without flashing boobs all over. You want that, go watch one of the Bimbo Movie Bash classics like Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers or Slave Girls Beyond Infinity. You want meaningless nudity, watch those. Just my input. Cheers and game on, my friends

Yes, I think it's neccesary, especially in slashers. The amount that for example the remake of F13 (2009) has, well that might be too much for someone, but I'm OK with it. Totally OK.

When there is no nudity in slasher, well that's basically as if someone removed all the gore from it. IMO.

I don’t even notice it anymore. I get teased about that by my friends but I’ve seen so many horror movies, it doesn’t even show up for me. Like was said on here before, Jason Lives has no nudity and I really enjoy that movie.

Haha, Jason Lives has entered the chat, it's the only Friday the 13th film to have no Nudity.
