Nosferatu Empty Nosferatu

Post by ThePunisher December 28th 2024, 6:42 am

I saw this movie last night. It wasn't bad, but not great either. The movie was well acted, but very slow paced.

The plot is a familiar one. A real estate guy from Germany goes to this old run-down castle in the Carpathian Mountains to sell a house to a retired old man "who doesn't get out much", according to the guy who runs the real estate agency. The "retired guy" has " one foot in the grave" according to the head realtor (only one? I thought he lived in a coffin in the day) and goes by the name Count Orloff. But hey, why not call him Count Dracula, it's the exact same story isn't it?

Our hero the Count traps the realtor in his castle after said realtor ignores the warnings of the gypsies living nearby (doesn't everybody?). The Count travels by ship to go to his new digs and is after the realtor's wife, in case you didn't know already. We also have the crazy guy warning everyone that "HE " is coming.

It's not a bad night out if you're not looking for anything original. I think I've heard Nosferatu is "based on" Dracula, but aren't they all?

Nosferatu Empty Re: Nosferatu

Haven't seen it yet, but the original wasn't just based on Dracula, Nosferatu was supposed to be an adaptation of the novel. Dracula wasn't public domain though yet, and the filmmakers couldn't secure the rights to use the Dracula name from Stoker's widow, so changes had to be made for legal reasons. Dracula became Orlok and the movie couldn't be marketed as a Dracula adaptation, despite the fact it clearly was to anyone familiar with the story.

Now, I've never seen the original Nosferatu, I just can't do silent movies, so I can't say for sure how close to book Nosferatu is or what they had to change to avoid legal ramifications, other than the characters being converted from British to German, which is understandable since the Original Nosferatu is a German production.

I do know the 2024 film is an American remake of the classic German film, so they decided to keep the new film closer to Nosferatu than Dracula... Not sure if that's because of genuine love for the original film, or because of whatever rights the original rights holders still hold... I have no idea how German copyright laws work, but Nosferatu was always Dracula under a different't name. The story similarities are not a coincidence at all.

Sometimes I think if you've seen one vampire movie, you've seen 100 of them. The similarities aren't exactly superficial.

Sounds a little like the Friday the 13th franchise.
